Fan's Speak... Cohesion is developing a core following.
Your music is the absolute dogs bollocks. (text) Jimmy Leeds Its been a while since I caught Cohesion live and
from what i saw at Fibbers (07/02/06) I've really been missing out. With a
great new guitarist and fantastic new songs, you guys just keep getting better
and better. You were head and shoulders above the rest, victory was never in
doubt! Will definately be heading to another gig very soon.
Ian Caught you guys purely by accident at The
Junction in York as we were watching a friend's band ("To A Story") play. All
of us there were taken aback by how excellent your performance was and we look
forward to seeing you play more gigs in Yorkshire and will do our best to
spread the word!
Pat My band recently played alongside yours at "The
Junction" for the Casualty night and i just wanted to say that I was blown away
by your set! It pretty much epitomised everything I love about music. One
compliment I can give is that you sound better live than on your cd! Excellent,
hope to see you again.
John To A Story Hey Paul James, have yet to make it to a "real"
gig but your fabulous session at Carnevale in Italy swept me and everyone else
off our feet. Your music is sheer brilliance. When i'm back in the UK i hope
i'll be able to see you guys live.
Becci ITALY FIBBERS, YORK
Yet another electrical performance by the indie band 'Cohesion' that sent chills down anyone's spine. The York born band set the night off at Fibbers (9th May) and were easily the best band of the night! The band have hit the music scene with a bang and I recommend that you go to their next gig. RUNAWAY
favourites Cohesion stormed to victory in the latest Fibbers/The Press Battle
of the Bands 2006 semi-final, with a rip-roaring performance that set a packed
dance floor buzzing.
With their tight blues-rock sound, and lead singer Paul Clark's rasping vocals, they were every note a band on their way a revved-up Franz Ferdinand with smarter lyrics and more attitude. Before they started their set the last of three bands to perform the expectation in the audience was palpable. People were expecting great things. And they weren't disappointed. Their set was charged full of energy and exploded with Mr Doormat an anthem for anyone who's ever been walked over. Storming guitar riffs and blazing solos from guitarist Adam Pickering followed on You're Such A Bore and new song Blind like Kaiser Chiefs crossed with Muse and the volume turned up. Their massive legion of fans a product of their growing following on York's music circuit whooped with delight as they closed with Okay. The song was a brilliant take on the quiet-loud formula, a bouncy, catchy anthem that was a perfect end to their set and led them to a place in the competition's final. Jimi Cooke has
left Cohesion and is moving to Norway. Jimi joined Cohesion in January 2006 to
fill in, giving the band time to find a replacement guitarist following the
departure of Jamie Pashley in December 2005.
Cohesion would like to thank Jimi for his contribution both musically and spiritually to the band. Cohesion is pleased to welcome Adam Pickering AKA Pyx to the Cohesion line up. Born 6th February 1983, Pyx has tons of live performance experience with former bands 'No Right Turn' and 'Needs Fire'. He studied Politics at Newcastle University and has just finished his masters degree in International Studies at the University of Leeds. MUSICAL INFLUENCES: Bob Dylan most notable amongst many other types of music. From where I was
stood there was a sense of anticipation... Cohesion are very slick. The breaks
in "Mr Doormat" were spot on and musically they could not be faulted. ... a lot
of the fans knew all the lyrics to all the songs. The band exuded charisma from
the stage and worked together as one unit. They got a very good cheer at the
end of the set. Good stuff.
Paul Cunniff, Acomb Music The murky Mecca of
all things loud plays host to the exciting new incarnation of AKP and the
fantastic BOTB competition favourite Cohesion. Cohesion start things of with an
onslaught of intelligent Indie, delivered with a slick, rock-tight, precision.
I hate clichés, catch phrases and advertising slogans but Cohesion is a
brand like Hammerite. Surely, a band with a sound like this should have
included a nonsensical The in their name, The Cohesives
perhaps. Maybe not. Theyd need a quick trip to Tony & Guy first to
get rock-fop haircuts and a bankrupting shopping trip at Sara Coggles to jump
on that particular bandwagon. Thankfully, they look (and sound) more like
Average Joes playing damn fine Rock music, substance over style, akin to Nine
Black Alps. The songs are superb, the communication between the musicians is
outstanding and they play with such incredible confidence, self-belief and
maturity. Cohesion are a band aching for the attention they rightly deserve and
I hope they get it.
Jim Flanagan, Talk Magazine According to a
panel of music industry experts Cohesion were one of the best new bands of
2005. The experts... legendary producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Rolling
Stones, Talking Heads); Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols); Rhodi
Marsden (music journalist, The Independent); singer/songwriter
Kate Havnevik (Moby); Mick Feldman (Managing Director
Fume Records and former head of A&R Sony Europe).

Cohesion's line
up consists of brothers Paul James (Voice, Verse and Riffs Guru) and Richie
Clark (The Beat Master) with Matt Goodbody (The Bass-line
Wizard).
Cohesion were formed back in November 2004 when the line up included Jamie Pashley on rhythm guitar. The band had their first practice session at the Jam Factory in York and it was there that they embarked on a sound that differed from today's market with a clever fusion of indie, rock and blues influences. Cohesion have been through three guitarists (Jamie Pashley, Jimi Cooke and Adam Pickering) before settling on their current three member line up of Paul James, Richie Clark and Matt Goodbody. CoBiogs
![]() Paul James - Voice, Verse and Riffs Guru Born: 12-06-82 Paul James is Cohesion's frontman, a classically trained, multi-instrumentalist and song-writer. Paul James was bought his first guitar when he was aged 11 and has been writing and performing since he was 14. His experience as a writer and performer spans everything from rock to classical. It is his wide and varied musical interest and experience from which Paul James draws his inspiration. Public school educated, Paul James went on to study music, music theory and performing arts at sixth form college. After completing his A levels Paul James went on to gain a degree from the University of Leeds and then went on to complete a post-graduate certificate in education. He is now a qualified primary teacher teaching in North Yorkshire. Cohesion is not about one idea or presentation and sticking to it. It's about change. Matt - Bass-line
WizardryBorn: 25-08-82 Matt is Cohesion's bass player and currently lives in Leeds. After finishing his degree at York in July 2005 he moved back to Leeds to do a master's degree at Leeds Uni. Prior to joining Cohesion, Matt was the bass player with a four piece punk rock band. Like the other members of Cohesion Matt has considerable live performance experience and is a real showman on stage. His previous band gained notable success and was on the verge of a record deal but things didn't quite work out, for one reason or another, so he joined Cohesion. "Our self-belief will pay off very soon. Richie - Beat-master Extraordinaire Born: 02-01-84 Over the years Richie has developed an exciting stage presence and despite breaking into technically complex sequences always keeps perfect time... he got his first drum kit when he was just 10 years old and he's been banging ever since. After leaving public school, Richie went to sixth form and then to university in York to do a degree which he completed in July 2005. He is now teaching physical education at secondary level. "We're banging on doors. It's only a matter of time before one opens for us." |
Having listened to the first mix of Cohesions new CD, Id describe
the tracks as varied in tone and stylistically uncategorisable, but one thing
is clear: I felt it was bloody
brilliant! Far ranging influences bleed throughout. Kelly Slater DRINK CD
EP
Review by Karen Maughan Great band, can't wait to see them live. Four self-penned blues-rock tracks from this York-based band, who have only been together for a few months. The opening track, 99 Miles, sets the mood with a foot-tapping, upbeat tempo. Invisible, Another You and Drink follow, each with a slightly different bluesy feel, and each featuring the distinctive vocal sound of Paul James . At something over 7 minutes, Drink the track is perhaps a little long for an EP, however, I am sure it will be terrific as part of a live set. Karen Maughan *****

THE LINK An assured first CD ep from York based Cohesion. Paul James (vocals/lead guitar/keys) lists the Doors amongst his influences and there are echoes of Jim Morrison here, particularly in the opening track '99 Miles' and 'Another You'. Cohesion formed in November 2004 and immediately made an impact on the local York scene with their unique take on original material - "a fusion of indie, rock and blues influences". The title track 'Drink' is a no-holds-barred lament - "try and sleep it off...", restrained instrumentation pushes the well organised lyrics of this tune to the foreground. This young band should go far. link *****

THE TALK... Cohesion; four lads play three chords like theres 40 of the little buggers and they just have that thing where you think youve heard the song before but you dont recognise it. You cant help turn your head, tap your feet, hands anything you can move really, and watch the singer wail like Kurt Cobains mentor and do it so well, see the drummer appreciate how talented his elder sibling is and equal the talent by using his Animal school for drumming skills. The rhythm guitarist plays it cool and note perfect consistently all night something lacking from a few bands at the moment, knowing youre jobs the rhythm guitar and not should I do a little bit of lead here? and the bass player does his job perfectly. A suggestion; try some harmonies might make the sound even fuller. link Cohesion in London

A change of line up, high
profile gigs in Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Newcastle... a recording
contract and distribution deal on the table and an album due for release Easter
2007... it's all systems go. 2006 saw Cohesion shift from a four to a three piece band when it was decided not to replace departing guitarist Adam Pickering earlier in the year. This was a bold move that appears to have paid off. The band has received much critical acclaim throughout 2006 and now have a recording contract and distribution deal on the table with the promise of an album release Easter 2007. With high profile gigs at venues such as Carling Academy, Liverpool, Pure, Manchester, The Boardwalk, Sheffield and The Cluny, Newcastle, Cohesion is surely a band on the verge. Support in 2006 has come from a number of signed bands including Switches, Blackbud and Brinkman. Cohesion shot a video in October which should be available soon courtesy of Hurricane Films). In addition the band did the Minster FM roadshow in August. No one knows what's in store for 2007 but with their first album due Easter and a UK Tour on the cards for summer 2007... watch this space! 2005 was an
exciting year for Cohesion with high-profile gigs in London and Leeds. Band
highlights include: playing Live 8 at the
Picturedrome (July); winning the regional heat of the
Global Battle of the Bands
(September); supporting Kubb (October), Kubb (Mercury Records) have been voted best
new band for 2006 and are tipped to be as big as Coldplay; coming fourth in the
national final of GBOB at the
Mean Fiddler, London (November); being voted one of the
best new bands of 2005 by a panel of music industry experts
(November).
Cohesion have gone from strength to strength picking up new fans along the way and now boast a sizeable following. The band's first CD EP DRINK, with four self-penned songs, was released in January 2005 to much critical acclaim. This was followed in June by the band's second CD EP entitled 'COLD'. Cold, which was recorded live by James Brown at Temple Hall contained eight new songs, all originals. Following the success of 'COLD' the band released 'RUN' and 'MR DOORMAT' in late 2005. Following the departure of Jamie Pashley in December, Cohesion expect to be back in the studio again to record new material in 2006. Cohesion continue to attract industry interest and are likely to sign a record deal in 2006. Review... Cohesion live @
Mean Fiddler, LONDON
COHESION come on like The Coral
jamming with The Who, they play songs with terrace chant choruses to die for
and hearts of gold. While the first song sounds like Oasis babysitting The
Arctic Monkeys, their second song is a punk funk disco floorfiller that erupts
like Franz Ferdinand on speed and vodka.

The
Picturedrome ![]() Concert Saturday, 2nd July, 2005 THE LONG WALK TO JUSTICE Cohesion are pleased to have taken part in this marathon, 8 hour, Live8 concert at The Picturedrome Yorkshire. See concert photos here REVIEW HEATHEN ANGEL "York band, Cohesion, are less than a year old and yet they sound as tight as a band who have been around far longer. This 4 track demo, written and recorded within 8 weeks of forming, showcases a talented quartet of musicians who pull together indie, rock and blues to craft a commercial and mainstream EP of demos. Opening track, 99 Miles, takes a blues heavy sound and slaps on a uptempo beat underneath singer Paul James's vocals that have a flavouring of Jim Morrison to them all in all a rousing blues rock track that echoes the likes of Free and The Doors. The lyrics too are ambiguously innocent/dirty, much like Morrison. Invisible is more of a brooding indie rock song with touches of keyboards in the background and Paul Jamess mournful vocals bemoaning someone not noticing him in a relationship. Another You sees a return to the 70s blues rock fronted by Jim Morrison sound and plenty of guitar hero licks from Jamie Pash Pashley. Closer and title track Drink sees Free replaced by a restrained U2 on the instrumentation as provides his most emotive and pleading vocal performance so far on a dark and sombre song. If Cohesion can produce this kind of music so early in their career you have to wonder what theyll come up with in the future. Carry on in this vein and many will be finding out very quickly as word-of-mouth spreads the bands name. By Scott Brown link |
